Among the proven global reserves of bauxite, 92% is weathered latelite-type bauxite, belonging to the tribauxite type. These bauxites have certain characteristics, such as low silicon, high iron, high aluminum-silicon ratio, and they are mainly distributed in west Africa, Oceania, Central and South America and other places. The remaining 8% is sedimentary bauxite, of the diaspore and diaspore types, of medium to low grade, mainly distributed in Greece, the former Yugoslavia and Hungary.

Because of the different characteristics of the three kinds of bauxite, each alumina production enterprises in the production of different production technology, there are mainly Bayer process, alkali lime sintering process and Bayer-sintering combined process. Generally, high grade bauxite is produced by Bayer process, and medium and low grade bauxite is produced by combination or sintering process. Because of its simple process and low energy consumption, the Bayer process has become one of the main methods used in alumina production.
