Properties and uses of brass wire

(1) Room temperature microstructure of common brass wire.
Common brass is copper zinc binary alloy, its zinc content varies widely, so its room temperature microstructure is also very different. There are three kinds of microstructure of brass at room temperature. The microstructure of brass with zinc content below 35% at room temperature is composed of single-phase α solid solution, which is called α brass; At room temperature, the microstructure of brasses with zinc content in the range of 36% to 46% consists of (α+β) two phases, which is called (α+β) brass (two-phase brass). The brasses with more than 46% ~ 50% zinc content only consist of β phase at room temperature, which is called β brass.

(2) Pressure processing performance

α single-phase brass has good plasticity and can withstand hot and cold processing, but α single-phase brass is prone to moderate temperature brittleness during hot processing such as forging. The specific temperature range varies with the amount of Zn, generally between 200 and 700℃. Therefore, the temperature should be higher than 700℃ during hot working. The reason for the occurrence of mid-temperature brittle zone in single-phase α-brass is that there exist two ordered compounds, Cu3Zn and Cu9Zn, in the α-phase zone of Cu-Zn alloy system. In addition, trace harmful impurities of lead and bismuth in the alloy form low melting point eutectic films with copper, which are distributed on the grain boundary, resulting in intergranular fracture during hot working. The practice shows that adding a small amount of cerium can effectively eliminate the middle temperature brittleness of brass wire.

In the alloy structure of two-phase brass, besides the α phase with good plasticity, β solid solution based on electronic compound CuZn appears. The β phase has high plasticity at high temperature, while the β 'phase (ordered solid solution) at low temperature is hard and brittle. Therefore (α+β) brass should be forged in hot state. β brass with zinc content of more than 46% ~ 50% can not be processed by pressure because of its hard and brittle properties.

(3) Mechanical properties

The mechanical properties of brass wire are different because of the amount of zinc in it. The mechanical properties of brass vary with the amount of zinc in it. For alpha brass, both σb and δ increase with the increase of zinc content. For (α+β) brass, the strength at room temperature increases until the zinc content increases to about 45%. If the zinc content is further increased, the strength of the alloy decreases sharply due to the appearance of more brittle r phase in the microstructure. The room temperature ductility of (α+β) brass decreases with the increase of zinc content. So the copper zinc alloy containing more than 45% zinc has no practical value.
